    Jeff Printz brings more than 25 years of experience as a Professional Engineer and Project Manager to mathematics instruction at Accelerated Potential Academy.

    For an engineer, mathematics isn't simply a collection of formulas and procedures. It is a way of thinking.

    Engineering requires you to recognize relationships, analyze information, identify what is known and unknown, select strategies, solve unfamiliar problems and determine whether an answer actually makes sense.

    Jeff brings that perspective into his work with students.

    What do I know?
    What am I trying to find?
    How are these quantities related?

    Not every student who comes to APA has a learning disability, whether it's reading, writing or math.

    Students come to us for many different reasons.

    Some are significantly behind and need important mathematical foundations rebuilt. Some are struggling with their current math course. Some have dyscalculia, ADHD or executive-function difficulties. Some are earning acceptable grades but rely heavily on memorization and don't understand mathematics as deeply as they could.

    Why Is My Child Struggling With Math?

    Mathematics is cumulative.

    New concepts depend on previous understanding, so a weakness that begins years earlier can become increasingly visible as mathematics becomes more complex.

    A student struggling with algebra, for example, may not primarily have an algebra problem.

     

    Difficulty with fractions, integers, proportional reasoning, operations or number relationships may be making algebra considerably harder.

    Math difficulties can involve:

    • number sense and understanding quantity

    • fact retrieval and computational fluency

    • addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

    Effective Intervention Begins With Understanding

    A student's grade level doesn't necessarily tell us where instruction should begin.

    A Grade 5 student struggling with division may have insecure number relationships or multiplication concepts.

    That's why assessment is an important part of APA's approach.
     

    Depending on the student's needs, a math assessment may examine areas such as:

    We want to know what the student genuinely understands, where understanding begins to break down, what is secure and what needs to happen next.

    Individualized Mathematics Intervention

    Once we understand where a student is starting, we build forward.

    APA's math intervention is explicit, structured, systematic and individualized. Depending on the learner, we may target number sense, operations, fact fluency, fractions, proportional reasoning, algebraic thinking, problem solving and mathematical reasoning.

    Skills are not taught in isolation. We deliberately connect new learning to previous concepts so students develop understanding that is flexible, durable and useful beyond the tutoring session.

    We start where understanding is secure and systematically build from there.

    Conceptual Understanding and Procedural Fluency

    Students need more than memorized steps but they also need efficient, accurate procedures.

    At APA, we develop both.

    Conceptual understanding helps students understand why a strategy works, recognize mathematical relationships and apply their knowledge when a problem looks different.

    Procedural fluency helps students carry out calculations and strategies accurately, efficiently and with increasing automaticity.

    When students have one without the other, difficulties often appear. A student may understand a concept but work so slowly that every problem becomes exhausting. Another may memorize a procedure but become lost as soon as the question changes.

    We intentionally connect the two so students learn not only what to do, but why it works, when to use it and how to apply it independently.

    Students need both understanding and fluency and they need them connected.

    Structured Does Not Mean One-Size-Fits-All

    Students can earn the same mark on a math test for completely different reasons.

    One may have a conceptual gap. Another may make computational errors. A third may understand the concept but struggle with working memory or multi-step problems.

    That's why we continually monitor understanding, strategy use, accuracy and independence.

    When Math Difficulties Are Persistent: Could It Be Dyscalculia?

    Some students experience persistent difficulty with number sense, quantities, math facts, place value, calculations or mathematical relationships even when they are capable learners in other areas.

    In some cases, these patterns may be associated with dyscalculia, a specific learning difficulty involving mathematics.

    When appropriate, assessment can help clarify what is contributing to the difficulty and where intervention should begin.

    A diagnosis can provide useful answers. The important next step is knowing what to teach.

    Math, Working Memory & Executive Functioning

    Math often requires students to hold information in mind, choose a strategy, complete several steps, monitor for errors and decide whether an answer makes sense.

    For students with ADHD, working-memory or executive-function difficulties, these demands can become a significant barrier even when they understand the mathematics.

    APA integrates strategies that help students organize information, break problems into manageable steps, select strategies, monitor their work and become increasingly independent.
